JOB DESCRIPTION

We’re looking for an experienced interior designer passionate about historic spaces to join our small but growing team – and to grow with it! 

As a designer at Common Bond Design, you will manage projects from conception to completion.  The principle will provide mentorship, and guide you towards a work product consistent with the studio’s aesthetic and standards, while a studio manager provides administrative support.  A successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years experience in both residential and commercial design, including hospitality. JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • based in New York City area

  • 3+ years of experience in high-end residential and commercial design, including hospitality

  • a degree in Interior Design or Architecture

  • fluency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite

  • fluency in the 2D drafting program of your choice, such as Revit, Vectorworks or AutoCAD, with the comfort and patience to work with .dwg files imported from other platforms. 

  • an openness and aptitude to learning new technologies

  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • ability to independently manage workflow, with well honed instincts on when to seek input or delegate to other team members.

  • organized, proactive, detail-oriented and capable of problem-solving, including calmly adapting to changes in plan.

  • knowledge of health, safety, and accessibility codes, or the research skills to familiarize yourself with them.

Bonus Skills + Experience

  • an enthusiasm and knack for hand drawing

  • fluency in a 3D rendering platform

  • experience with a project management platform like Studio Designer, Design Manager, Ivy, etc.

  • NCIDQ certification holder

  • sustainable design credential(s) such as LEED, WELL, LFA

  • familiarity with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties

Responsibilities

  • conduct site survey to inform drawing set

  • research architectural and decorative arts history relevant to project site

  • produce and present compelling schematic design consistent with our aesthetic and standards

  • maintain an open, collaborative dialogue with clients and design partners throughout the life of the project, translating communication into meeting minutes and deliverables.

  • produce / maintain a detailed drawing set, including bid documents, construction drawings, and shop drawings for custom fabrication. 

  • FF&E, including product research, sourcing, quoting, sampling, client approval and procurement

  • project management, including creating / maintaining a project budget and FF&E schedules, as well as construction administration

  • share the stories behind our work through social media, photoshoots and industry press.

Availability

  • available to work 36 to 40 hours per week, with occasional overtime necessary to meet client deadlines. While we aim to set client expectations so that overtime is not required, it is occasionally incurred while traveling to / from remote project sites, or on installation and photoshoot days. 

  • available to work within 8am-6pm ET Monday through Friday. This is the window in which most of our commercial clients, construction partners and vendors are available, as well as the window in which New York City co-ops / condos allow construction and deliveries. You will not be expected to work on weekends.

  • available to travel, including overnight trips, to project sites outside of New York City. The role might require you to travel for up to 3 nights at a time. 

  • available to work in the office or in the field. A desk will be made available to you at our office in Dumbo, although you are welcome to supplement office and field work with remote work when appropriate.
