ABOUT US

Common Bond Design was founded in 2013 by Alex Kalita. We are based in Brooklyn, with a secondary office in Tampa, and projects throughout the country. Over the last decade, our studio has grown into a collaborative team that skillfully manages every aspect of the interior design process, providing our clients a full service experience.

Our ideal projects are extensive renovations of historic spaces. We take a sensitive and holistic approach to adapting them for the demands of modern life, from interior architecture to finish, fixture, furniture, and accessory selection.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY | Though each of our projects is uniquely informed by client and site, they share a common bond. Our work is,

  • narrative. We tell stories through design by centering heirlooms, artwork and artifacts that express the client’s personal history; and by collaborating with skilled craftspeople who contribute their own point of view through their work. Strong design has narrative structure, a central thread that progresses like a plot as you move through a space.

  • site sensitive, reflecting the character and context of the project site and its community. We believe in honoring the architecture of a space, and seek to preserve historical sites, while equipping them to meet the demands of modern living. We also aim to be mindful of our impact on the environment.

  • flexible enough to adapt if the clients’ needs, abilities, goals, or space changes. To enhance flexibility, modular products feature prominently in our portfolio. Modular furniture can evolve with a client, reducing waste and forging a lifelong – even multigenerational – attachment between clients and the items they interact with daily.

  • functional. even when historic preservation is at the core of the project, our approach is modern, with an eye towards the utility and cultural standards of today. In the commercial and public context, functional should mean functional for all. Accessibility is a passion that animates our work.

AESTHETICS | Our interiors are defined by,

  • restraint, a spare and disciplined appearance.

  • contrast, a deliberate juxtaposition of shape; motif; material type, age, color, and texture to bring each feature into sharper relief.

  • timelessness, a temporal slipperiness that allows it to remain fresh and relevant well into the future.
